Foreign Material Testing

Foreign material analysis is a visual inspection of cannabis and cannabis products required by the state.

THC Analytical Lab utilizes a microscope to visually inspect cannabis and cannabis products for sand, soil, cinders, dirt, mold, insect fragments, hair, and mammalian excreta.

The state outlines allowable limits for foreign material analysis and is deemed to have passed if the sample does not exceed the following:

  1. 1/4 of the total sample area covered by sand, soil, cinders, or dirt;

  2. 1/4 of the total sample area covered by mold;

  3. 1 insect fragment, 1 hair, or 1 count mammalian excreta per 3.0 grams; or

  4. 1/4 of the total sample area covered by an imbedded foreign material.
